It was a great first week in First Grade!
In our literature blocks, we read stories about self control (our value of the month) and being a a good friend. We read What I did on my Summer Vacation, Invisible Boy, Tattle Tongue, and We’re all Wonders. This prompted different activities like writing in our journal about ways to be a good friend, and doing a wordsearch looking for words we heard in the story. We even tried writing with “invisible ink.” As you probably saw on our line.
In Math, we worked with some new manipulatives; power polygons, geo blocks and pattern blocks. This was designed to get us noticing things about these tools, ie: what could they be used for? what do they look like? Is anything the same about all the tools? or different? We also played a card game called “start with, get to.” And, we got out our ten frames. We are building a foundation of curiosity as we review concepts of addition to 20, and strategies for addition. Here’s a peek into one of our rooms in action…
We also did a lot of assessing of our kiddos to get them ready for reading groups, and to guide our teaching in writing and math. We got to visit all of our specials this week, and we are all moving well as respective classes. Great start!
Finally, When we read the story, My Mouth is a Volcano, it gave us a great idea for a science experiment. You can see it live if you click on the link below:
Have a wonderful week!
